Do the math

People now a days think that the world is mainly christian. Christians tell how they should be happy to live in such a christian populated world, while Atheists and other religions complain of the Christian conspirecy which is taking over our world. I just thought I'd write down a few researched facts about this.

FACT: polls indicate that 33% of the world is Christian

FACT: on average per city, less than 1 tenth of those who say they're a Christian on a poll will actually fit in the amount of churches that the city has

FACT: most churches average a little more than half full

FACT: on average, about 87% of people in a church actually have attempted to become born again Christians

FACT: on average about 42% of people who have attempted to become born again Christians actually believe that there's a judgement after death and actually live their lives to try to become better and better Christians.

Before you judge DO THE MATH

Source?

I've never seen atheists have a go at Christians (or anybody else) for their beliefs.

However, I can understand it in the US for example; where we are seeing the government and it's policy-makers being hijacked by the religious right and consequently invading my day-to-day life. Such as:

1) The implementation of the 12-step program as a normal punishment for crimes involving alcohol. No other program can be substituted in many cases, only this one.

2) The banning of various sexual acts between two consenting adults (and I don't mean really freaky stuff or stuff that can cause pain/suffering)

3) The whole gay marriage thing (e.g. I don't care what your book says, just leave people alone and let them be happy)

4) Forcing Creationism to be taught in public schools (because it's idiotic and wrong; learn it at church if you must)

I can go on but you get the idea.

I'm atheist myself, but I don't like to call myself this because at the end of the day I don't care about religion. It just doesn't concern me. You believe what you want and I'll believe what I want and we can all be happy.

But until everyone shuts up and minds their own business the arguments and fights will continue.

Again, not trying to offend you or insult your beliefs at all. Just giving you a different point of view; keep in mind that I live in a country that is dominated by religion. :)

The world is definitely not mostly Christian! Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist adherents outnumber Christians I am sure. I agree with Alex that most atheists are indifferent towards Christians. From what I have observed, so-called Christians do more damage to Christianity than people who are not. I agree with you that going to church does not make a person a Christian.
James 1:26, 27 sums up what I think is the best description of a Christian...

If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

I interpret this to mean that a Christian is careful not to be hurtful with their words. Their life is one of service to others, and their lifestyle is without reproach.

Really? This is news for me (where did you get your sources?). I don't know anyone who thinks that 1)The world is mainly Christian and 2)I have yet to meet/befriend an Atheist etc. who thinks that Christianity is taking over the world.

When I hear anyone bash Christians, it's usually because they've met someone (or a group of people) who's either a hypocrite or extremely judgmental. And it's understandable - I myself can't stand when "Christians" behave like that, or when their world view is so small (this can go for any religion also).

Personally, I'm not a fan of statistics. They're just numbers that can be manipulated or are just meaningless altogether. For instance, when I hear/read stats from somewhere I think, "Where do they get this from?", "Why didn't they ask me?" and "Why can't I find out who made these stats most of the freaking time!?!".

phewph sorry I've been gone for a while and didn't expect this many comments, well the ideas of christians taking over the world and christians saying rejoice for being in such a christian world is mainly from around here. I mainly wrote this blog post cause they were driving me nuts. the research for the % of christians in the world was taken by the census takers, for the amount of churches per people who say they're christian you take the number of seats that all the churches in a city combined have and divide it into the number of people in that city who say that they're christian, you do this for several cities and although it's not perfect in figuring things out *sorry if I implied that I'm a genious* it does give you a basic idea.

Alex: sorry, didn't say this is from all atheists just the ones I deal with. personally what others do with their lives is out of my control, I can wish that they were christian but going out and forcing my beliefs won't change anything, instead this is more for the atheists I have met who try to force their beliefs on christians. the ones that make words from christianity bad not allowed words, the ones that get you in trouble for praying and give you a hard time because they fear that we're some primitive clan that's going to shut out science.
